If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and wanted to cry just looking at your skin, this post is for you. You’d think after your teenage years you wouldn’t have to deal with breakouts, but last spring I found myself in my mid-30s with skin looking worse than it had in my life.
It was BAD. I mean Proactiv before commercial bad. I had to go on a three-month course of antibiotics for my acne and it was barely helping. I was desperate, and I had a vacation to England planned and knew I’d be in a lot of pictures.
My only solution was to buy some Benefit Erase Paste (highly recommend, btw) and spackle that on along with some heavy foundation. I watched YouTube makeup tutorials from girls with severe acne and managed to cover up my face enough that a lot of people didn’t notice. But I did, and I was tired of it.
Decléor Saves the Day
I wasn’t very familiar with the Decléor Paris brand until last May when I saw one of my favorite British authors, Giovanna Fletcher, was hosting the opening of the new Decléor UK shop in Notting Hill. It happened to be the same week I was in London, so I emailed the PR rep to attend the party. Not only did I have a great time chatting with Gi, but I found two items that helped me to get rid of my embarrassing acne (mostly) for good.
When I told the fab woman from Decléor about my skin issues, she showed me a few products to try, assuring me they would help with the breakouts. I was skeptical, but at that point, what did I have to lose … other than £50 or so? I purchased the Aromessence Neroli night balm she suggested, as well as a mask.
I was also able to choose some mini products for my “pick n’ mix” party gift bag, and one of the items I chose was this Ylang Cananga anti-blemish face oil serum (which sadly, I can’t obtain in America).
I went back to our Airbnb that night and tried the night balm. I’m not going to lie, the texture weirded me out at first. It’s very thick and kind of greasy – a true balm texture. Imagine putting lip balm on your face. I thought there was no way it was going to help my skin and feared it would actually make it worse. But people, this stuff WORKS!
I woke up the next day and there was a noticeable improvement in my breakouts in one night. I’d never seen such a dramatic result in any product I’d used before, so I was more than pleased with my purchase! The Decléor lady told me to use it every other night and alternate with the mask. The next night I used the mask and it made my skin really soft, but I can’t say it helped with the breakouts.
The balm, however, combined with the face oil, has helped tremendously. I use the balm every other night, alternating with a Retinol cream my dermatologist prescribed. If I find a breakout coming on or some clogged pores, I use the face oil during the day. Thankfully, I don’t need it often. I haven’t even finished the tiny bottle of oil over the course of a year!
I try to use natural beauty products whenever possible, so I love that the balm and oil both are 100% naturally derived. Decléor products also use aromatherapy, which makes them feel really spa-like when you use them, too.
Where to Buy
The only downside of Decléor is, unfortunately, it’s not sold in America (other than in a small number of salons and spas). But the good news is you can order their range from lookfantastic.com, one of my favorite British beauty sites, and they have FREE worldwide delivery.
You can also find selected Decléor products on Amazon, like the night balm.
The only thing I haven’t been able to buy online is my face oil. Leave it to me to fall in love with a product that’s not actually available in my country! I’ll have to wait until my royal wedding trip to get a new bottle, but I plan to be in the neighborhood anyway, so it’s not a hassle.
The Meghan Connection
Harry and Meghan hadn’t even gone public with their relationship at the point when I bought my products, but months later I read Meghan Markle’s makeup artist said she swears by Decléor Aromessence Rose D’Orient Soothing Oil Serum. Apparently, she uses it to prep her skin before makeup. You can get a bottle on Amazon (it’s on Prime, too!). I can definitely see Meghan using their products, as Decléor pride themselves on natural beauty.
Another Decléor shout out: I connected with some really fun women at the event and almost a year later, many of us still keep in touch on social media. New friends and no acne? Win-win!
