We’re getting down to the wire with just days until Christmas! I don’t know about you, but I feel like the last few weeks have been a blur of gift swaps, ugly sweaters, and Christmas cookies. Of course, I took some style inspiration from our favorite duchesses at some of my Christmas get-togethers!
It’s a crazy busy week but I wanted to pop on the blog and do a quick post with two different holiday outfits – both would be great for a New Year’s Eve party or any other event you have coming up in the next month.
I was at a Stella & Dot party a few weeks ago and fell in love with this faux shearling vest. I always liked the black suede vest Kate wore while out running errands a few years ago, and this Stella & Dot one has the same type of drapey shawl collar as the Club Monaco coat Meghan recently wore. Kate’s Temperley vest – or gilet if you want to be British about it – comes in at over £1,000. Since I don’t have that kind of budget, this was the perfect solution for me. I got my Chalet Vest on sale for half off because of a special promotion running at the trunk show, but it’s normally $99. Still a bargain compared to Kate’s!
The vest is super warm and very versatile – I’ve worn it with black jeans as well as a skirt. It was great for a dinner-and-a-movie date night with my husband! I don’t usually do an all-black outfit like this, but the different texture of the vest adds some interest to an otherwise basic outfit. When Kate recently wore a black turtleneck and black jeans it kind of looked like a one-piece catsuit in some pictures so I think you need something to break it up.
My top is a rib knit mock turtleneck from H&M (exact one isn’t sold online but this one is similar) and my black jeans are from STS Blue ($49 at Nordstrom). They’re soft and stretchy but not toooo stretchy, like the kind you need to hike up halfway through the day. These are my go-to bottoms to wear when I’m traveling because you look pulled together but still super comfortable. I paired the outfit with La Canadienne weatherproof leather riding boots (they’re on sale right now at Nordstrom, although I got them a few years ago in the Anniversary Sale for less!). I adore these boots and they are well worth the investment since you can wear them in inclement weather and not worry about ruining them. Also, because I have a very skinny calf it’s hard to find tall boots that don’t gap out and look silly. These fit the bill!
My last two Kate touches: her Ray-Ban Folding Wayfarers and baroque pearl earrings which were kindly gifted to me by IMaccessory on Etsy. They look quite similar to Kate’s – in fact she’s wearing hers today to the Buckingham Palace Christmas Lunch!
Our girl Kate loves a black watch tartan and Meghan also sported a beautiful tartan coat when she was visiting Edinburgh. Personally, I enjoy pretty much anything tartan (I must get myself to Scotland ASAP) and when I spotted this skirt on Amazon I had to get it. I wore it to my friend’s holiday party last weekend and it was the perfect outfit to wear without being too in-your-face Christmas.
This is surprisingly heavy and well-made for the price! It’s definitely a winter-weight woolen skirt, so I’ll be sad to pack it away come springtime.
It’s available in six different colors and if you order it with Prime you’ll probably still get yours in time to wear for Christmas (or at least New Year’s Eve). I wore mine with a years-old black turtleneck from Old Navy but this one from Target is similar.
In terms of accessories, I wore one of my fave bracelets from Stella & Dot, the Renegade Cluster as seen on Katy Perry and some other celebs. This is slightly edgy with the spikes but not over the top. I tied off my outfit – literally – with the J. Crew velvet bow as seen on Kate. It’s so festive! It’s sold out but you can find a similar one for under $3 at Forever 21.
This will be my last post before Christmas, so I hope everyone enjoys their time with family and friends over the next week! I wonder what Kate and Meghan will wear for the annual church service this year?
